Marquee Event of the Day

> March 5, 2002: Venezuelan politician Hugo Chávez dies at age 58.

Why this matters: Hugo Chávez was a transformative and polarizing leader who reshaped Venezuelan politics and left a lasting impact on Latin America. Rising from a modest background, Chávez first gained national prominence as a military officer involved in a failed coup, only to later win the presidency in 1998 on a platform of radical social reform and anti-imperialism. His policies, known as "Chavismo," aimed to redistribute wealth, empower the marginalized, and reduce U.S. influence in the region. Despite generating intense debate and deep political divisions, Chávez's legacy endures in the social programs he implemented and the new political discourse he ignited. His death on March 5, 2008, marked the end of an era, yet his influence continues to shape Venezuelan society and regional politics, symbolizing both the promise and the controversy of his revolutionary vision.
